Is the football GOAT debate finally over?

Lionel Messi's farewell to Argentina in early October, months after losing the 2026 World Cup final, has revived claims that he is football's undisputed greatest. Ronaldo's goal records and the World Cup legacies of Pele and Maradona keep the counter-case alive.

Is the football GOAT debate finally over?

The argument over football's greatest player has flared again after Lionel Messi's farewell to Argentina, a week in which Cristiano Ronaldo publicly fell out with Portugal's coach. This draft separates the records that can be checked from the judgments that cannot.

Key claims

  • Messi won the 2022 World Cup and was named its best player. (BBC Sport, 18 Dec 2022: he scored twice in the final, seven goals in seven games, and became the first player to win the Golden Ball twice.)
  • Messi has eight Ballon d'Or awards and Ronaldo has five. (Yahoo Sports, 12 Oct 2026, which also reports that Messi is among the 30 finalists for this year's award.)
  • Ronaldo has scored more career goals. (As of 14 Oct 2026, Marca puts Ronaldo at 981 and Messi at 934, and says Messi made 161 fewer appearances. BBC Sport put Ronaldo at 979 on 7 Oct.)
  • Ronaldo holds the men's international records with 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, and Messi retired as Argentina's record appearance-maker and goalscorer. (BBC Sport, 7 Oct 2026.)
  • Pele is the only man to win three World Cups, and Maradona's 1986 tournament is arguably the best individual tournament ever. (BBC Sport, 11 Jun 2026.)

What the evidence says so far

Why the debate is live now. Argentina lost the 2026 World Cup final 1-0 to Spain after extra time on 19 July. BBC Sport reported that Messi, 39, scored eight goals at the tournament and created both goals in the 2-1 semi-final win over England, but had only one shot in the final, which was off target. ESPN noted he became the first man to start three World Cup finals. He announced his international retirement in August and played his farewell match against Benin in Buenos Aires in early October, scoring in front of about 85,000 fans (BBC Sport, 7 Oct 2026). The same week, Ronaldo, 41, left Portugal's camp and publicly accused coach Jorge Jesus of an "absolute breach of trust" (BBC Sport).

The Messi case. His record includes a World Cup, two Copa Americas (BBC Sport), eight Ballons d'Or, two World Cup Golden Balls, and, as of December 2022, 21 goal contributions at World Cups, more than any other player (BBC Sport). Former Uruguay forward Alvaro Recoba told Tribuna.com that his consistency over 20 years makes him the greatest.

The Ronaldo case. Ronaldo leads on volume: more career goals and the international goals and appearances records. Broadcaster Piers Morgan, quoted by Marca, says nobody has won the league in more countries or scored more goals. Ronaldo himself told CNN Portugal (via Yahoo Sports) that he is "the best in history, full stop," while respecting people who prefer Messi, Pele or Maradona.

The Pele and Maradona case. BBC Sport's June 2026 ranking of World Cup legends puts Pele first and Maradona second, with Messi fourth. Pele won three World Cups and scored 12 goals in 14 games at the tournament. Maradona scored five goals and made five assists in 1986. Morgan says he rates Maradona above Messi. That ranking covers World Cup performance only, not whole careers.

What the evidence can and cannot settle. The records above can be checked, but they point in different directions depending on what you value: peak, trophies, individual awards, longevity or raw goal totals. The Irish Times columnist Gavin Cooney argues the Messi and Ronaldo debate is now settled in Messi's favour. That is an opinion, and it is based mostly on how the two careers are ending. The 2026 final itself was a poor night for Messi, so recent evidence does not all point one way.

Figures change. Both players are still active at club level, so goal totals are only valid for the date of each source. A full career assists comparison was not found in a source opened for this draft and is left out.

Source notes

Opinion: The Irish Times piece is a column. The BBC Sport top 10 is a writer's ranking. The Morgan, Ronaldo and Recoba quotes are personal views. The Recoba quote comes from Tribuna.com, seen only in a search result and not opened, so it is cited in the text but not listed as a source. Weak or secondary: Yahoo Sports quotes Ronaldo's CNN Portugal interview via Goal, not from the original. Marca says Messi's 934 goals come from figures cited in the Morgan discussion, so that number has not been checked against an official database. Not verified: an AP report on the 2026 final timed out and is not cited. Open gaps: career totals differ slightly by date (Ronaldo 979 on 7 Oct, 980 on 12 Oct, 981 on 14 Oct), and both players are still adding to them. No opened source gave a full career assists comparison or complete trophy counts for Messi or Ronaldo. The 2026 Ballon d'Or result had not been announced in the sources reviewed.
